U.S. President Donald Trump had previously hinted at imposing counter-tariffs on India. Now, that warning has become a reality. The Trump administration will begin imposing "counter-tariffs" on India starting April 2. Trump made this announcement during his address to the U.S. Congress.

This was Trump's first speech in Congress after being re-elected for a second term. During his address, he stated, "The European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada impose higher tariffs on us than we do on them, which is extremely unfair."

Specifically mentioning India, Trump said, "India imposes tariffs of over 100% on our cars. The average tariff China imposes on our products is twice what we impose on them. South Korea's average tariff is four times higher."

He further added, "During the Trump administration, if products are not manufactured in the United States, they will be subject to tariffs—sometimes significantly higher tariffs. For decades, various countries have imposed tariffs on us. Now, it is our turn to use tariffs as a weapon against them."

Trump announced that the U.S. would start imposing counter-tariffs on multiple countries from April 2. He humorously remarked that the tariffs could have been implemented from April 1, but people might mistake it for an "April Fools' Day" joke.

Following Trump's announcement, his supporter s in Congress stood up and applauded the decision.

On Tuesday, the U.S. had already imposed a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada. In response, the administration of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also imposed retaliatory tariffs. Meanwhile, the tariff rate on China has been increased from 10% to 20%, citing China's failure to take action against the production of fentanyl.
